Wikipedia defines Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as a term that stresses the role of unified communications and the integration of telecommunications (telephone lines and wireless signals), computers as well as necessary enterprise software, middleware, storage, and audio-visual systems, which enable users to access, store, transmit and manipulate information. ICT is that component of IT (Information Technology) which focuses on communication. Advent of newer technology in the field of ICT has brought the world closer and has transformed it into a ‘global village’.
ICT has very useful applications in the education sector including the potential of engaging much more students than can be engaged using conventional communication methods. The University of Delhi (DU) has already taken pioneering and spearheading measures in adopting and including ICT in its core curriculum. The Institute of Lifelong Learning’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and the Studio Lectures are some examples of these measures.
The eChakra Campaign is aimed at web-enabling the entire DU teaching community. This will provide to the faculty a common e-platform of showcasing the innovating teaching and research in an interactive manner. We believe that such an initiative will promote the academics taking place in DU and will significantly enhance the student-faculty relationship at a time when undergraduate research is being promoted as the need of the hour.
